Statement From Minister Hunter Regarding The Facility Condition Index

August 25, 2016

Mitzie Hunter, Minister of Education, issued the following statement about the release of the facility condition index:

“Investing in our schools is one of the most important infrastructure investments we can make for nearly two million students in Ontario and we remain committed to working with school boards to ensure that students have safe and healthy environments in which to learn.

Since 2003, our government has invested more than $14 billion in school infrastructure and renewal, including nearly 760 new schools and more than 735 additions and renovations.

I would like to thank the school boards for their support and continued work to help make schools better across Ontario. Making sure schools across the province are in a state of good repair is an essential part of supporting student achievement.

This June, I announced that we are investing an additional $1.1 billion dollars over the next two years to improve the overall condition of schools across the province, bringing the total two year renewal funding to $2.7 billion. The funding will enable school boards to repair roofs, update HVAC units and modernize electrical and plumbing systems. It will also significantly improve more visible elements of schools that impact students' learning and well-being, including flooring, walls, ceilings, playing fields and more.  School boards are ultimately responsible for allocating funds based on local needs.

The release of this data was the result of a commitment I made to ensure transparency and confidence in our public education system by releasing detailed information on the condition of each of Ontario’s schools.

Our investment to date is part of the largest investment in public infrastructure in the province's history – about $160 billion over 12 years, which is supporting 110,000 jobs every year across the province, with projects such as roads, bridges, transit systems, schools and hospitals.

We are committed to supporting school boards in providing a safe and healthy learning environments for our students.”
